Fitness Fact Friday: Target Heart Rate
Although Target Heart Rate (THR) is normally calculated at 70-85% of predicted Maximum Heart Rate (MHR), the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a more conservative 50-85%, thus taking into account new exercise enthusiasts that may require an initial “break-in” period. Of course, the expectation is that clients, will, over time, gradually build up cardiovascular training tolerance and consistently train at their higher THR range. Keep in mind, certain medications (i.e. blood pressure) may lower effective THR. Clients should be referred to their Primary Care Physician for guidance in this respect.
