“How do they do it!?” Our students who visit Bodies: The Exhibition are fascinated with how the human cadavers have been maintained.
To prevent decay, this exhibition uses a process called Polymer Preservation, according to standard mortuary science. The specimen is dissected to highlight a specific aspect within each system of the body (Respiratory, muscular, skeletal, nervous, digestive system, reproductive system, etc). Then, the specimen is immersed in acetone to eliminate body water. Next, the specimen is placed in a bath of silicone, or polymer, and sealed in a vacuum chamber which causes the acetone to leave the body in the form of gas. The polymers can then enter each cell and body tissue. Finally, a catalyst is applied, hardening and completing the process.
